Blood Test to Tell How Long You’ll Live November 30, 2012

Would you like to know how long you are going to live?… or maybe the exact date of your death. Apparently it sounds like science fiction, but in fact it’s not. At the moment through a blood test you could know things like these, and it’s not precisely expensive, I mean, if you have 500 euros in your pocket, you can get it.

The company who has developed this new technique is called “Life length” and right now, here in Spain we can do it, and find out when (approximately) you are going to die. But it’s not an easy decision to make, although if you think it carefully, by knowing your death date, you could focus on things that really matter and don’t waste your precious lifetime.

Take a look at the piece of news below, because perhaps you are already wasting your time…..

As Charles Dickens beautifully put it, “it was the best of times, it was the worst of times”.

Here’s a little listening comprehension activity for you. Watch the first three minutes of this video story and answer -as a comment- these 3 questions:

1. What did she buy at the supermarket?

2. What happened to her on her way to the supermarket?

3. Which comment causes the argument?

Note: My advanced students are excused from doing this as they already answered the questions in class.

There is a country where students start school at a later age, take fewer classes, enjoy a 3-month summer break, spend less time in school per day, have barely any homework and are barely tested. There is a country where teachers are respected professionals, quickly receive tenure, are rarely evaluated, earn average salaries and have a strong Union. There is a country where schools receive modest funding, develop their own curriculum, research and adopt new technologies, have no achievement gap and leave no child behind. This country ranks at the top of the world by almost every measure. Welcome to… Finland.

Who wouldn’t like the privilege of staying at a 7-star hotel? It comes at a price though: 100 dollars for afternoon tea.

This video is part of a video series called ResetLiveGrow. You can check out this channel on YouTube and watch other videos that this guy shot in other countries (including one in Spain for the Tomatina festival in Buñol). He decided to take a break and have a gap year to travel around the world. Cool stuff.

So here’s a question for you. Would you like to live in Dubai, let’s say for a year? Why? Why not? Send your comments in.

What an amazing advert!! Once again At. Madrid has surprised everyboby with its new advertisement, in which the team pays tribute to Radamel Falcao. But, as you can see,  it’s not just a conventional advert. Far from that, it has lot of imagination, a wonderful sountrack – “Eye of the tiger” by Survivor-, which fits perfectly in this case, not just for the tune but for the lyrics as well. In my opinion it’s just perfect, but I must say that perhaps I’m not too  objetive in this case…. I have been a die-hard Atlético fan for ages…

This morning, while looking for material to practice vocabulary related to personality in class (“in class” modifying the verb as in “practice in class”; not “personality in class”), I stumbled upon this very insightul and funny video. I love the speaker’s presentation skills. She has a great command of non-verbal language, gives us plenty of food for thought and she is extremly funny. Anyway, we will be exploring the first two types of personality she makes reference to. As for the third one… that’s your homework. Watch the last 4 minutes or so and tell me in class.

Politicians are not precisely popular at the moment in Spain, well not just in Spain, all around the world. But if you take a look at this video carefully, you’ll see for yourself that it’s possible to have a laugh at their expense, in spite of the fact that I guess that they weren’t aware of it.

Here you can see Obama and Romney singing as a duo a famous hit by Katy  Perry called “Hot and cold” . I think they did really well, just try to imagine Rubalcaba and Rajoy doing something like this…. it wouldn’t be the same.
